Getting to Olympus from Athens

Athens is the largest city as well as the capital of Greece. Its immense international airport caters to many European and international destinations, with hundreds of daily flights. Olympus is located just over 400 kilometers from Athens and can be reached via car, bus, train or plane. The most popular entrance point is the village of Litochoro as it’s also the starting point for many hiking trails.

From Thessaloniki to Olympus

Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece and in close proximity to Mount Olympus. Due to its international airport, many travelers visit Thessaloniki all year round, making it a popular tourist destination. To visit, first you have to pass through Litochoro, a traditional Greek village found at the foothill of the mountain. Litochoro can be easily reached by car, bus or train from Thessaloniki.

From Meteora to Olympus

Meteora is one of the most significant religious destinations in Greece, second only to Mount Athos. Meteora and Mount Olympus both played a paramount role in Greece’s history, one being the epicenter of the mythological faith in the Pantheon, while the other a refuge for Christianity. Although Meteora is a two-hour drive, there are no express bus lines or train routes that would ameliorate the pace of the journey.

Train to Olympus

Timeless since its invention, the train has been a most beloved means of transportation for a multitude of people, either for their daily commute or voyaging the world. Apart from walking and cycling, the most prudent way to travel – in terms of fuel-efficiency – is none other than rail transportation. For people to get to Olympus by train, they only have to purchase their ticket from TrainOSE and hop on board from one of the numerous stations throughout Greece, from Peloponnese, all the way to Western Macedonia, to the most northern part of Evros.

Bus to Olympus

To reach Olympus by bus, you will need to take a bus with Greece’s national bus service, KTEL. Each prefecture of Greece has its own designated KTEL bus station, creating a network of bus lines that connect almost every city in the country. The bus system can seem daunting at first as travellers have a hard time finding information online regarding bus routes.
